At the beginning of this year, Russian users of Samsung TVs faced an unexpected problem. Citing Russian laws (the principle of trademark rights exhaustion – Article 1487 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation), the manufacturer began blocking Smart TV functions. This affected all TVs except those sold in Russia through official Samsung stores.

In an attempt to protect the brand’s interests from unofficial imports, the company mainly caused inconvenience to consumers who had long since purchased this product. Not only those who brought TVs from abroad faced blocking, but also buyers from online stores. The situation is being widely and heatedly discussed on forums and social networks.

In this regard, Samsung Electronics made a statement explaining the situation:

• The availability of certain Smart TV functions depends on the region of its supply.
• The functions that were blocked were intended for users in other countries or regions.
• The blocked functions initially could not have been available without changing the original factory settings, i.e., ‘flashing’.
• Legal TVs are accompanied by an EAC certificate and are marked with the EAC sign on the body and packaging.
• TVs intended for Russia have the Latin letters RU at the end of their full name.
• The company urges customers to purchase products only from stores – its official representatives and the official online store. This guarantees full access to all intended device functions and manufacturer support.

How to bypass the blocking

While some active users of Samsung smart TVs are trying to challenge the company’s actions by appealing to Rospotrebnadzor and writing petitions on change.org, most are looking for ways to deal with the problem on their own. There are several options.

You can reconfigure the region and activate functions through a VPN of the European smart hub. This will make services and applications for the European market specified by the manufacturer available, however, often without many Russian channels

Also, you can replace the TV’s system board with the same one from a model official in Russia. The procedure is quite expensive – it can cost from 140 dollars and more.

There is also a possibility to bypass such blocking using a proxy for Samsung. It’s better not to use public and free IP addresses – they are slow and short-lived. It’s worth buying or renting a private proxy for Samsung TVs and getting a number of advantages:
